Municipal library of Aveiro

The “Biblioteca municipal de Aveiro” was inaugurated in 1927 and it setted installed in the former “ casa do despacho da santa casa da mesiricórdia”, only later in 1963, was aproved the construccion of a building destined to tourism, cultural services and library.
The building will ned to be inaugurated on the 16th of May of 1970, satisfaying this way the cultural needs at the time.
The social-economic development of the population of the councel, that granted to a large number of young people the access to education. New technological development contributed to the increase of the search of information in the “Biblioteca municipal de Aveiro”.
The number of user´s increased, making that the library didn´t manage to correspond to the need´s of the population.
Facing this adversities, the “autarquia” of Aveiro decided to candidadte to a secretary program of state of culture.
The architecture services of the “Câmara Municipal de Aveiro”, made a remarcable use of the building. Projecting the functional space esteticaly ajusted to the new demanding´s.
Gathering the traces and the main architectonic spaces of the building, apearing then the like atrium´s, “sala polivalente”, adult´s section, child´s section, and areas of management and services.

The “Biblioteca municipal de Aveiro” is one of the main cultural equipment´s that the “autarquia” to all the council of Aveiro. It intent´s are to create it´s services based on the manifest of UNESCO about the public library, gathering the values of information, of culture and pleasure.
